first this

and then this

This painting is called “In Erwartung (Gisela von Wehner)” (“Expectation”) by Albert von Keller and almost made me cry in the museum today.  Expectation of what?  And I know of what, or several possibilities – a kiss, or when you close your eyes and make a wish, “one two three, and he’ll be there, he’ll appear, he’ll contact” – and I know from standing outside of the frame that neither of those will come to her.  I know her expectation will be disappointed, and still she sits there, eyes closed, ready, waiting for the impossible.

i am all strung out in song.
